well, some people like david brooks and bill kristol who are thoughtful conservatives, but they kind of suspended their disbelief i think during the last days and weeks of the campaign. they were all on board with romney. they were all saying the polls were going to be wrong and romney was going to get it and romney was on the right track and romney had the right ideas, et cetera, et cetera. they're to be expected to be among the early changers, among the early people on the road to damascus because they've got one foot in politics and the other in journalism. but i think jindal is interesting. i think the real fight now, chris, is not whether people are getting on the road. it's what they're saying on the road because they have different theories about how to go forward. one is economics, one is cultural, and one is immigration. i think there are basically three routes there. >> i wonder whether they're all agreeing to changes in their party philosophy that don't affect their central beliefs. let's take a look at jindal who is a cultural conservative. he's acknowledging the republic

joining me, tom friedman, david brooks, tom brokaw, john meacham and amy gutman. >> i'm take within amy's comment that we've been campaigning in fiction and i would say extremely short fiction. it's been small and short. and so i guess the first thing i would do isi'd say you've got to draw a line between what we've been through and what we're about to go through. you have to make a clear statement that the election is past, i'm going to talk in a very different way, i'm going to talk in a much bigger way, i'm going to say we have three big problems, we have the debt problem, we have a growth problem, we have an inequality problem. they cross cut against each other and we're going to face this cliff pretty soon and so i'm going to do -- either what i didn't do or what president obama didn't do in the last four years, i'm going to lay out a plan. here it is, some people in my party won't beapp wit i, some people in the other party won't be happy but some will be intrigued in both parties, so here's my plan, let's work on this starting with my framework. >> rose: i'll ask all of you but beg

david brooks, are you shockd about indiana? >> no. no, there was no way barack obama was going to carry that. there were two states he carried last time that were a bit tbreekish. indiana was super freakish if i can go back to the 1970s. >> ifill: a good way to start the night. >> and north carolina was less freakish but still unusual. now north carolina is a swing state. that's in part because the demographics have shifted so much in north carolina. those were the two states he carried that will be uphill this time. >> woodruff: mark, what happened in indiana though? the president was campaigning there very late in the game in 2008. what changed on the ground and what changed with him? >> well, two things changed. first the that the president has by historians like richard and michael would say, the favorite for the election is he wasn't challenging the nomination for his own party. as a result he never developed any kind of a primary apparatus in aate lot of these states. they went directly into the states that david identified tass

by a bunch of other panelists for our discussion how far can innovation take our cities. >> thanks, david. while the panelists get ready, first of all i just wanted to thank you the sponsors and what what you have done because you have done two things. one, you've taken a very broad view of technology and innovation and said it right at the beginning, david, it's not just about the next iphone it's about connecting the dots between technology and innovation, manufacturing. the second thing is technology and innovation drive cities and cities and metro's drive the national economies. it takes a long time for the united states to remember that but 84% of our population live in the cities and metro and 91% of gdp. if the city still outperform the nation doesn't perform. we are joined here by john anderson an adjunct professor of wayne state but most importantly for the city government in detroit is a part of the restructuring. a fellow from cisco innovation unit michael littlejohn from cities and you've heard from carlo. it's very hard to moderate. all i want to do is tweet. this technology
